Being a professional photographer isn't about creating interesting pictures when the subject is easy and time elastic, it's about being able to create great pictures when an assignment is challenging and time is short. An instinctive feeling for light and form is paramount, coupled with an innate ability to think on one's feet and put subjects quickly at ease; these should be a given.
But managing a crew in the studio or on location, dealing with the unexpected, and being able to deliver to a client's brief on time and within budget are skills only acquired with experience.
